Vikki lent me this book recently and although at first I didn't think it would be my cup of tea, I ended up thoroughly enjoying it and laughed throughout. I can remember Pond Life (Candy Guard) when it was first televised in the mid-'90s, and it was entirely different to anything that had been broadcast before - a nice off-beat sense of humour. I was able to relate to Edie, although she was just a young girl trying to decide where her future lay. Her inability to make a decision without constantly changing her mind really struck a chord with me! The book if peppered with Candy Guard's quirky illustrations throughout.

Welcome to the world of Edie Dudman, girl in a rut, circa 1985. Edie's life would be great if it weren't for the fact that everything always goes a bit wrong. She's the girl whose tights go twisty at the crotch. She's the girl whose mum has bits of crisp permanently glued to her teeth, whose boyfriend is a two-timing bastard and whose rabbit, Flopsie, is always swiping at her nastily with its paw. Still, at least she has a perfect ex-best friend to highlight her flaws even more intensely and a mean old one-legged neighbour to make her life hell. "Just a Little Disco on an Open-Top Bus" is a sheer delight with characters who will, almost literally, spring off the page and show you their faces with glee.

Candy Guard established her reputation for comic observation and witty dialogue with thirteen animated shorts for Channel 4, MTV and the BBC. Alongside a highly successful strip cartoon in the Observer magazine, Candy created Pond Life, an animated sitcom for Channel 4 that won numerous awards and both critical and popular acclaim. Just a Little Disco on an Open-Top Bus is her first novel.
